What equipment is needed to practice freediving?

Freediving is the quintessential freedom you can experience while diving! You go underwater without equipment and stay under the surface for as long as you can safely hold your breath.

Freediving is like running. One and the other can be tried by almost anyone, matching the intensity of the activity to one’s own abilities. To start running you just need the right shoes. To start freediving diving all you have to do is… apply! You don’t have to make special preparations for it or invest in any accessories or equipment.

The low threshold for entry into so-called “free diving” makes it an excellent way to try your hand at diving in general and see for yourself if this is the activity for you.

Freediving diving can be practiced without any equipment

Freediving is often referred to as equipment-free diving. And in fact, breath-hold diving does not require any specialized equipment! The basic and completely sufficient equipment for a freediver (especially a beginner!) is the ABC equipment, i.e. mask, snorkel and fins.

The most important tasks of ABC equipment, are:

  • A mask or goggles with a nose guard protect the eyes from contact with water and enable effective underwater vision,
  • snorkel – indispensable in snorkeling, in freediving, for example, it allows you to swim to the point of immersion below the surface of the water (without having to lift your head),
  • Flippers – to increase the diver’s mobility, speeding up swimming and ascending.

What equipment do freedivers use?

Divers practicing freediving at higher levels can use additional equipment and devices. These are various types of accessories that are primarily intended to increase the comfort and safety level of freedivers, but also enable them to effectively monitor selected diving parameters or improve the efficiency and speed of dives and ascents.

Swimming foams and skins

Foam or swim skins provide the diver with optimal thermal comfort and protect his body from cooling down too quickly. Freediving diving in pools such as Deespot does not require the use of foams and swim skins. Our water has a constant temperature of about 32-34 °C at all depths and is pleasantly warm.

Additional equipment for freedivers

Freedivers who improve their qualifications in subsequent courses and dive both in closed and open water at greater depths can expand their equipment with, among other things:

  • ballast – additional buoyancy elements, such as belt ballast or leg ballast, to effectively manage the depth of submersion,
  • specialized diving consoles and dive computers – usually in the form of a wristwatch. The devices can be equipped with a thermometer, depth gauge or compass,
  • light accessories (flashlights, flashes, chemical lights) – increasing the visibility and safety of the freediver diving after dark and in waters with reduced clarity. The flashlights also help bring out colors lost during night dives, dives in murky waters and dives at depths of less than 10 meters.

Freediving diving in the pool is also exciting

Freediving diving in natural bodies of water is very attractive, and exploring underwater flora and fauna provides an extraordinary experience.
