At what age can children start diving lessons?

Diving lessons can begin for children who have completed 10. year of life. Diving organizations allow the child’s age to be lowered to 8. year of age. This applies only to children who are of the right weight and can cooperate well with the instructor.

Too low a child’s weight, on the other hand, may mean having to postpone the start of diving, even when the child is already 10 years old! Inability to focus attention and insubordination in following the instructor’s instructions are also factors in delaying the start of learning.

What illnesses prevent you from starting your diving adventure?

There is a relatively short list of diseases and conditions that are absolute contraindications to diving. You will not receive a doctor’s approval to dive if you are diagnosed with: pregnancy, diabetes, asthma, and emphysema and obstructive lesions of the airways (including COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Absolute contraindications to diving also include a history of thoracotomy, seizures and loss of consciousness (for unexplained reasons), and certain mental/psychiatric illnesses (for example, anxiety disorders).

Diving is also forbidden in cases of past ear surgery and eardrum perforation.

Ailments that are relative contraindications to diving

In the case of certain ailments and conditions, there can be a relative contraindication to diving. This means that a particular problem in a particular patient must be studied and analyzed in depth. We are talking here, among other things. of significantly reduced lung reserve capacity identified by the study, diseases of the circulatory system (primarily coronary artery disease and hypertension), as well as a very serious visual defect, chronic sinus disease and obesity.

On a case-by-case basis, the doctor may decide to postpone the start of the dive, for example, until the patient’s condition is adjusted or the contraindication is resolved.

Don’t dive if you feel unwell on the day, have an active viral or bacterial infection, or are under the influence of alcohol or other psychoactive substances!

Can elderly people start diving?

Adults and seniors can start diving lessons at any time, with no upper age limit. The prerequisite is that the diver obtains permission from a family doctor/primary physician or sports doctor.

If necessary, the issuance of consent may be preceded by the need for specialized consultations, such as with a cardiologist. The doctor may also approve diving, but with a limitation on the depth of descent underwater or the time spent underwater.

When does a disability prevent you from learning to dive?

Water and scuba diving are accessible to both able-bodied people and people with various disabilities. We’re talking about both people with motor disabilities, such as those who are paralyzed (to varying degrees) or who struggle with limb paresis (upper and/or lower), as well as those with visual (visually impaired and blind) and hearing (hearing impaired and deaf) disabilities.

The basis for the safe diving of people with disabilities is that there are no medical contraindications to diving and that the diving is approved by the attending physician, who, if necessary, may order additional consultations with a specialist, such as a pulmonologist or cardiologist, before granting approval. In addition, as part of the preparation for the first dive, a person with a disability must receive mandatory training.

It should be noted that the same safety rules, according to the “Law of January 18, 1996. On physical culture “apply to people with and without disabilities.

Persons with mobility impairments may require additional assistance – a diver with limited mobility, depending on the degree of disability, is usually accompanied by 2 or 3 partners who are certified divers. Most people with visual and hearing disabilities can dive accompanied by a single, properly trained dive instructor.

Barrier-free diving? By all means! People with disabilities who want to develop their diving skills can do so through the Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA), among others. This is an organization that allows people with disabilities to earn diving degrees in accordance with the guidelines of international diving associations (PADI, SSI).
